Join this small-group harbor bike tour and sail away to Europe’s largest port. During this 3-hour tour limited to 10 people, you will bike through old, new and redeveloped parts of the harbor, seeing a very diverse mix of harbor activities. After biking, hop on a boat with the bikes to enjoy a nice and relaxing trip back to the city. The bike tour is a very dynamic, informative and active tour where you will really experience the harbor from up close with your guide. Tour is limited to 8 people and includes a bike, boat ticket, cool city map, and snack.

This 3-hour small group tour starts at Rotterdam Central Station at 10am, where your knowledgeable and fun guide will pick you up, and where you collect the bikes. In this dynamic 9.5-mile/15-kilometer tour, you will bike through the city and stop at the old city harbor Veerhaven, then continue biking through a tunnel under the Meuse River to end up in one of the most interesting harbors of the port of Rotterdam - the Waalhaven. This harbor is not only used for the transshipment of thousands of containers, but also many bulk cargo ships dock here to load and offload. Especially during weekdays this Rotterdam harbor is very active and there is much to see and explore.

You will bike between enormous container-ships and cranes, learn how the port is developing into the ‘smartest’ harbor in the world, and see massive bulk and salvage ships. Also on the list is an exploration of an old dry dock area, which recently has been transformed into a hub for research, design and manufacturing. Here you can learn everything about innovation in the port. See interesting sustainability initiatives and even find a little secret beach, with an ominous history, where the locals go for a swim in the Meuse. After biking, you'll board a boat taking your bike with you and enjoy a nice ride back to the city.

At the end of the tour, you'll ride back to your original departure point at Central Station arriving around 1pm.

Please note: Meeting time is 9:45am at Rotterdam Central Station. Your guide will be waiting for you directly outside the main entrance of Rotterdam Central Station on the big square. You will recognize your guide by a big blue folder on which Inside Rotterdam is written.

Admission for Escher in Het Paleis in The Hague

Admission for Escher in Het Paleis in The Hague - The Hague, Netherlands

Experience the world of M.C. Escher at Escher in the Palace, housed in a former Royal Palace in The Hague ... More info ›

Experience the world of M.C. Escher at Escher in the Palace, housed in a former Royal Palace in The Hague. Escher in Het Paleis is a permanent exhibition dedicated to the world-famous artist M.C. Escher.

With over 150 prints you can always see the best known works and a changing selection of graphic work and tesselations from the complete works of Maurits C. Escher (1898-1972) at Escher in Het Paleis.

The art of Escher instills a sense of bewilderment and wonder, and fascinates young and old alike with his magical world. The exhibition includes famous ‘impossible’ prints such as “Day and Night”, where the Dutch landscape appears to morph into a flock of birds, and “Climbing and Descending” which depicts rows of people perpetually ascending and descending a flight of stairs. His fantastical structures, which couldn't possibly exist in the real world, are optical illusions that play with perspective.
As well as showcasing his famous prints, The Palace also houses a collection of Escher’s early works, such as the beautiful Italian landscapes, studies of Moorish mosaics and bizarre still lives. The photographs of Escher’s family capture the private life of Escher, and the wood blocks and lithographic stones familiarize visitors in an accessible manner with his working methods.

Experience the world of Escher:

The second floor has been changed into a special experience for the presentation: In the Eye of Escher. An optical illusion depicts something which is in fact impossible. M.C. Escher was a master in this field. An optical illusion literally means doing puzzles with your eyes. The visitor will be able to unravel some of Escher’s mysteries like the Impossible Penrose Triangle by constructing one himself. The extra presentation “In the Eye of Escher” shows various themes in which Escher was involved, like reflection, perception and perspective.

You may also enter one of the largest churches and according to your taste, visit one more museum or the botanic garden.

Meet your professional experienced guide at 10:15am, and start your tour in the inner courtyard of the central courtyard of the RMO Museum of Antiquities. This hall opens at 10am every day except on Mondays. Your guide will tell you stories of how art objects functioned in the cultures of Greece, Rome and during Dutch prehistory. He will also explain the manner of acquiring these magnificent art objects.

Enjoy a little coffee break inside the museum hall or outside in the old cafes in the city center (on your own expense). Then move on to the interesting old center of Leiden with  Rembrandt's Latin School and the huge church with the Pilgrim Fathers monuments. Continue to the historic City and discover an edifice which may be hidden from your view: a 'motte' castle. This is a medieval man-made mound of earth with a defense castle on the top.

After a good lunch bite (cost not included), you may make your choice of ONE of the great local museums: Seventeenth Century paintings in the Lakenhal; Medical history in the Boerhaave museum or to see extensive exhibitions of world cultures in the Ethnology (Volkenkunde) museum. During your 3 hour tour led by an art historian guide, you will visit the Royal Cabinet of Paintings, Mauritshuis.  Afterwards, you can take a stroll through the old center and visit the amazing XXL modern white City Hall. According to your own tastes, you may visit one more museum: The Hague Historical Museum, the Gemeentemuseum (Mondrian), or a minor museum.

Meet your guide at 10:15am, who is a leading specialist in Dutch art, specifically Vermeer and Rembrandt. He is able to introduce you to the visual wonders and the painted elements.

After about an hour inside the Museum, you will take a refreshment and proceed for a walk to the brand new white City Hall, designed by the US architect Richard Meier. It is one of the biggest atriums (inner halls) of any kind in Europe. As a statement of municipal power, it vies with other buildings in The Hague like the series of palaces and embassies. The Hague as the seat of government wishes to impress.

Afterwards it is time for a bite (cost not included) which you will take at the big square (Plein) in one of the many colorful sidewalk cafes, either outside or inside. You may opt to visit one of other museums, and these are the options: the nearby Hague Historical Museum, or a minor museum such as the Bredius Museum with minor but interesting 17th century Dutch artists, collected by a former director of the Mauritshuis. You may also like to see the nearby Escher museum, which shows graphic art (lithography). A bit further away, the Gemeentemuseum holds the best Mondrian collection in the world and exhibits De Stijl story on design and furniture. Please note: a visit to the Gemeentemuseum requires a taxi ride or a tram ride on line 16 (your own expense).

After the last museum visit, you will be directed towards the Railway Station.
